Longtime Alaska resident Gene W. Miller died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, with her family by her side after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 78.

An Irish wake potluck will be held in her memory at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at the VFW Post No. 10046, 134 Birch Lane in Soldotna.

"Her ashes will be scattered along with her husband's this summer where the blue and green waters meet in Cook Inlet," her family said.

Mrs. Miller was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Madisonville, Ky., to Ira Bailey and Hattye Alheim. She moved to Nevada where she married her childhood sweetheart, Charles Miller, a World War II and Korean war veteran Sept. 3, 1949. Their son Charles was born in Nevada in 1950, daughter Teresa was born in Texas in 1952. They were stationed in Japan from 1953-55. They drove the Alaska Highway in 1955 to be stationed at Ft. Richardson. Their daughter Roberta was born on Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1958. Their son Tony was born on Elmendorf in 1959 and youngest daughter Linda was born in the old Providence Hospital in 1960. They moved to Kenai in 1963.

She spent many summers commercial fishing at their set net site at Pt. Harriet until 1976. They built their dream home on Cohoe Loop in 1979. She worked at Central Peninsula Hospital in housekeeping until she retired in 1994. She loved spending time with her family including the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved crocheting, knitting, beading, cooking, painting and making quilts for all of the babies.

Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years; parents; sister, Viola Soares; and brother, Ira Bailey Jr.

She is survived by sisters, Shirley Meyers of Idaho and Alice Foster of California; sons, Charles Miller of Kenai and Tony Miller and his wife, Wendy, of Kasilof; daughters; Teresa Kalfsbeek of Wasilla, Roberta O'Brien and her husband, Tim, of Nikiski, Linda Becker and her husband, Hal, of Soldotna; grandchildren, Joe Kalfsbeek, Jessica Miller, Tara (O'Brien) Harris, Jayme Friske, Charleen Miller, Thomas Miller, Willie Kalfsbeek, Tiffany (Miller) Dodd, Traci O'Brien, Annalisa (Kalfsbeek) Garcia, Kerry (O'Brien) Kunkel, Nicole Bradfield, Michael Miller and Steven Miller; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Justin, Dylan, Ashlyn, Alexus, Vincent, Kepree, Kai, Cayman, Victoria, Chase, Ashley, Tristania, Tristan, Tyler, Gavin, Lily Anne and Caedence.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations be sent to the Hospice of the Central Peninsula, P.O. Box 2584, Soldotna, AK 99669 or to the Oncology Department c/o Central Peninsula Hospital, 250 Hospital Place, Soldotna, AK 99699.
