ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The state has decided to extend the comment period on the proposed route for the southern extension of Tony Knowles Coastal Trail in Anchorage by 60 days, to March 7.
Hearings on the state's ''preferred'' route were scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at the Egan Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage. The route mostly follows the coastline.
Gov. Frank Murkowski said in a written statement that he ordered a longer comment period on a draft environmental impact statement for the project to allow more time ''before we lock down any particular course of action.''
He noted the issue has generated strong feelings among supporters and opponents of a coastal route for the trail.
