FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Former state Rep. Joe Hayes of Fairbanks has a new job.

The one-term Democrat had sought reelection but was defeated last month by Republican Jim Holm. Hayes has been hired as executive director of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Alumni Association.

Hayes earned his bachelor's degree in political science from UAF in 1997 and was elected student body president and student regent.

He was chief of staff for state Rep. Tom Brice from 1997 to 2000.
