Electric Light parade brings thousands to watch in Kenai

Posted: Wednesday, December 11, 2002

The largest shopping day of the year culminated in Kenai with an electric light parade that rivaled the creativity of a Disneyland event, and challenged police who closed down the Spur Highway for more than an hour as the parade passed by. When the last float had turned into the Sears parking lot, the thousands who turned out in the mild weather enjoyed an Old Town I luminary Walking Tour, Living Nativity scene, and fireworks display that lit up the evening skies for miles around.

Grande Marshall's for this year's parade were local dog mushing champions Jon Little, who placed 4th in the 2002 Iditarod, and Paul Gephardt, 2000 Iditarod 2nd place finisher. The judges awarded the Grand Prize Over All in the float competition to the swimming fish entry of Lynden Transport and Fred Meyers. 1st Place in the commercial category went to the entry of T&G Builders, 1st Place Organization to Kenai Wild, 1st Place Youth to the Alaska Young Marines, and 1st Place Judges Choice to R&K Industrial, and 1st Place Individual to Paul Gephardt & Red Dog. Judges for this year's parade were Amy Anderson, Mike and Dixie Nugent.
