Kenai girls start season by toppling Seward

The visiting Kardinals girls overcame an early deficit to beat the Seahawks 40-28 Saturday at Seward.

After trailing 10-6 at the end of the first period, the Kardinals clamped down on defense to start the second half.

Kenai didn’t allow a field goal as Seward’s only two points came from the charity stripe in the third quarter. The Kardinals stretched their lead to 32-17 entering the final eight minutes.

Lindsey Keener led the Kardinals with 11 points. Samantha Navarre added eight points and Amber McGlasson seven.

The Seahawks were paced by Kursten Stallings 10 points and Rachael Crane’s nine.

Homer girls 53, Nikiski 40

The Homer girls defeated the visiting Bulldogs on Saturday at Homer High School.

Allison Horazdovsky poured in 25 points to lead the Mariners.

Homer took a slim lead early and was able to hold off the Bulldogs as they coasted to the win.

Sarah Herrin led the Bulldogs with 19 points in the losing effort.

Reba Temple added 13 points for Homer.

Skyview girls 52, Grace Christian 27

The Skyview girls took an early lead and never looked back en route to a victory over the Grace Christian Grizzlies Saturday at Skyview.

The Panthers also converted on 16 of their 23 free throws, while the Grizzlies sank only 6-of-28.

Melissa Fay led the Panthers with a game-high 16 points, Nicole VanRyzin added 12, and Anna Blake had 11, nine of which came in the second period.

Soldotna girls 44, Homer 31

The Homer girls dropped a 44-31 decision to the visiting Soldotna Stars Friday night at Homer High School.

After an 8-8 tie in the first quarter, the Stars closed the second half by outscoring the Mariners 11-4 to take the lead for good.

Jenni Stenga led the Stars with 12 points and Paige Blackburn added 10.

Claire Siekaniec’s 10 points and Reba Temple’s nine led the Mariners.

Kenai boys 64, Seward 57

The Kenai boys drained 10 3-pointers in their win against the Seahawks Saturday at Seward.

Kenai took an early 14-8 lead after the first quarter and maintained a slim lead on the Seahawks the rest of the game.

Nate Saltzgiver led the Kardinals with 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Casey Ellis added 15 points, sinking three 3-pointers and Kevin Epperheimer pitched in 10 points.

Seward was led by Corey Hetrick’s 21 points.

Homer boys 79, Nikiski 49

The Homer boys ousted the visiting Bulldogs of Nikiski Saturday at Homer High School.

Luke Gilbert hit four 3-pointers and had a game-high 24 points to lead the Mariners.

Jeremy Andrews added 13 points and Noah McWilliams pitched in 12.

Nikisiki’s Zech Hemphill paced the Bulldogs with 11 points.

Skyview boys 52, Grace Christian 45, OT

The Panthers pulled out a victory against the visiting Grizzlies in overtime Saturday at Skyview.

Skyview outscored Grace Christian 7-1 in the extra period. The Panthers were able to seal the win by going 5-for-8 from the free-throw line in overtime.

D.J. Foister led the Panthers with 16 points.

Eagle River boys 53, Soldotna 50, OT

The Soldotna Stars dropped a 53-50 overtime game to the visiting Eagle River Wolves Saturday at Soldotna High School.

The Stars managed only one field goal in the extra period and were outscored 5-2.

Brian Blossom led the Stars with 11 points and Tony Besse added 10 in the losing effort.

Eagle River boys 52, Homer 49

The Homer boys lost to the visiting Eagle River Wolves 52-49 Friday night at Homer High School. Trailing by nine points entering the fourth quarter the Mariners outscored the Wolves 21-15 in the final quarter, but fell short in the end.

Luke Gilbert led the Mariners with 15 points, while Noah McWilliams pitched in 11. Both combined to score 15 of the Mariners’ final 21 points.
