Nikiski resident Loretta (Correa) VanHorn died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, following a long battle with cancer at her daughter's home in Nikiski. She was 63.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Ronda's home in Nikiski. Further directions may be obtained called by calling 776-3496. Pastor Henry Haney will assist with the time of sharing and remembering. Ms. VanHorn's ashes will be scattered this summer at the Jesse Lee Children's Home, where she grew up in Seward.
Ms. VanHorn was born at the U.S.I.O. Hospital in Kanakanak on Aug. 5, 1940, to Sasha (Kalomoff) and Frank Correa, both of Snag Point. She was raised in the Jesse Lee Children's Home and attended, as well as completed, school in Seward.
Over the years, she continued her education in a variety of areas. She is well known throughout the Seward area for her love of Scrabble and a good argument. She had never met a friend or stranger she could not enjoy a conversation with. She lived in Anchorage and Seattle briefly, but she was a part of Seward and as a result she spent most of her life there.
The last few months of her life were spent with her children and grandchildren in Nikiski.
"It was during that time that she made peace with her Lord and Savior and is enjoying being forever with her Lord Jesus Christ," her family said.
Ms. VanHorn was a devoted grandmother who spent many years assisting her children in raising the grandchildren when they had to work or be away from their homes. She served at many community social functions in Seward. She loved to cook to classical music, play Scrabble and garden. People were her special interest.
"She will be sadly missed and will remain forever in our hearts," her family said.
Ms. VanHorn was preceded in death by her father, Frank Correa, and her brother, Frank Correa Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Wilcox, and her children, Dean Houser and Orren and Hannah Wilcox, all of Wasilla; daughter, Ronda Holben of Nikiski and her children, David Parnell of Nikiski, and Eric and his wife, Christina, and Jonathon Parnell, all of Kenai; great-grandchildren, Jared and Destiny Parnell; sisters, Marcie (Olga) Kilborn of Kodiak, and Ruby Haywood of Seattle; and brother, Franky Correa of Alaska.
