The Soldotna High School girls basketball team tipped off the season Friday against the Chugiak Mustangs in a nonconference game at Soldotna.

The Stars were able to stay with the Mustangs early in the game, but with its dominance in the paint and Soldotna's struggles shooting from the perimeter, Chugiak ran away for a 62-22 win.

"We played with a lot of different things tonight," said Chugiak coach Tracy Adams. "I'm pleased with the outcome, all things considered. The execution was acceptable for this early in the season."

Early in the game, it looked as though the Stars would be able to stay with the Chugiak, a team Soldotna coach Mark Tuter said would be one of the top three in the state this season.

Chugiak's Kelsey Griffin scored the first four points of the game as the Mustangs opened up with a press, but Soldotna's Kaylee Wilbanks hit a jumper from the foul line to put the Stars on the board.

The Mustangs answered with four more points before Soldotna's Marlana McCown nailed a 3-pointer to cut Chugiak's lead to three, 8-5.

The Stars perimeter shooting went cold after that, though, and the Mustangs, playing with a significant height advantage, dominated the boards at both ends of the floor, denying the Stars any second-chance shots at one end of the floor while turning rebounds into points at the other.

Tuter said his squad had its confidence rattled after missing a few shots.

"They (Chugiak) played very well and we didn't play up to what I hoped we would play," Tuter said. "We were just timid, and it showed in our offense with out shooting."

Griffin led all scorers with 27 points.

Christa Kennedy and Liz Denna each had five points to lead the Stars. McCown and Wilbanks each finished with four.

The Stars will have a chance to get back on the horse this week as they visit Nikiski Friday and host Seward Saturday. Both are nonconference games.
