SEAFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Jim Thorpe's Canton Bulldogs football jersey sold for $284,350 at auction, the highest price for a non-baseball jersey.

The black football sweater is from about 1916-17 and had been preserved by Thorpe's third wife, Patricia. The jersey features a tan Canton ''C'' knit into the fabric and tan and red trimming on each sleeve.

''We were proud to offer this unique piece of sports history and are just delighted that its record sale price honors Jim Thorpe for his monumental achievements,'' said Josh Evans of Lelands.com, which ran the auction.

Baseball items recorded many of the highest bids in an auction that reached $6.2 million in sales.
