Pictured above are members of the National Barrel Horse Association District AK 01. It held its awards banquet Oct. 22 at the Kenai River Center. Outstanding individuals who received the Volunteer of the Year awards were Randy Jensen, Laurie Wilkinson and Rhonda Harvey. Walt Williamson, Dillon Jensen, Dalton McWhorter and Jesse Rogde also were recognized for their volunteer efforts. Colten Jensen received a $50 gift certificate and one large round bale of hay; Beth Fowler for the high sponsor earner won a $100 gift certificate; NBHA 2005 Horse of the Year and photo plaque went to Taco a 16-year-old registered Quarter Horse and his human partner, 15-year-old, Colten Jensen. Jensen is the youth 1D pole bending champion and youth barrels 1D fourth, 2D third, and 3D third; Mel Cale Memorial Rookie of the Year was awarded to 6-year-old Athena Glidewell and her horse Bud. She raced 10 out of 15 sanctioned events with an initial barrel time of 82.005 seconds and an ending time of 24.822 seconds. Her pole bending times started at 100.152 and ended at 34.018; engraved trophy saddles were awarded to the champions in each division of their class. Canvas prints, action photos, NBHA clothing, buckles, jewelry, custom made trophy saddle stands with engraving, and vehicle rodeo decals were some of the other awards that were presented. Participants had a potluck and music was provided on the guitar and sung by singer and songwriter Kate Baum. There also was a silent auction.
