Area athletes boost UAA cross country

Seven area athletes helped the University of Alaska Anchorage cross country team to a successful season in 2006.

The area athletes listed on the roster were senior Brent Knight of Soldotna, sophomore Mick Boyle of Kenai, senior Mary Krusen of Kenai, freshman Andy Liebner of Soldotna, junior Cliff Cochran of Kenai, freshman Rachel McCartan of Kenai and sophomore Heather McIntyre of Kenai.

At the Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet in late October in Lacey, Wash., Knight collected his first all-conference award by placing 10th with a time of 25 minutes, 33.38 seconds, on the 8-kilometer course. Both the men and women finished second at the meet.

Boyle, Knight and Krusen were then named to the 2006 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country All-Academic Team. To be eligible, runners must hold an overall grade-point average of 3.20 or above and be in the second full year of competition.

On Nov. 4, the UAA men earned their second consecutive berth to Nationals after placing third overall at the 2006 NCAA West Regional Cross Country meet in Chico, Calif., at the Lake Forebay Aquatics Center. Knight claimed his first all-region honors when he finished 15th in 33:19.17 on the 10-kilometer course. Boyle and Liebner also competed for UAA at the meet, but did not score. Boyle finished 65th in 35:18.18, while Liebner was 74th in 35:43.45. Krusen competed for the women at the meet and was 82nd, running 6 kilometers in 24:24.

At the 2006 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships on Nov. 18 in Pensacola, Fla., the UAA men finished 15th on the 10-kilometer course. Knight and Boyle were scoring runners for the Seawolves. Knight finished 85th in 31:35.7, while Boyle finished 147th in 32:50.0. Liebner also ran for the Seawolves and finished 173rd in 33:42.9.
