Howarth receives academic award

Former Soldotna resident Rica N. Howarth recently was awarded the Rule, Hughes and Murphy prize from Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa.

The $2,000 prize was given to select sophomores for academic achievement, academic promise and leadership potential. The winners were selected by the college president.

Howarth majors in biology and has a 3.93 grade point average.

She is a member of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates, Alpha Phi Omega International Service Fraternity, GIVE and the Asian Student Association. She plans to enter medical school upon graduation.

She is the daughter of Bruce and Tamara Passe and Steve Howarth, all of Soldotna.
