Ray C. Olds

Longtime Kenai resident Ray C. Olds died Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at home in Kenai. He was 81.

A viewing will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, until the funeral services begins at 2 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai. Military honors will performed by American Legion Post No. 20 and VFW Post No. 10046. Pastor Robert Devolld will officiate. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, Mary Olds, at the Kenai City Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Steve Olds, Jesse Peck and Jason Espinoza.

Mr. Olds was born Jan. 22, 1926, north of Curtis, Okla., to Ruby and Ray Olds Sr. He was raised in Mooreland, Okla., where he attended Mooreland High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 at the age of 16. He married Mary Lou Simmons when he was 18. They moved to California and had four children. They then moved to Alaska in 1965 during Alaska's oil boom years.

"Ray 'Papa' served our country during World War II on the USS Mount Olympus that was deployed in the South Pacific near Tahiti. He was awarded four battles stars, two for sea battles and two for amphibious landings. After he was discharged from the Navy, he worked in the oilfields in Texas, California and Alaska. Papa enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his wife and grandchildren. He was always there in time of need. He was a grandfather, father and best friend. He passed away to join his bride on their anniversary. Papa will be missed dearly," his family said.

Mr. Olds was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou; parents, Ruby Olds-Reese and Ray Olds, Sr.; stepfather, Jim Reese; daughters, Raye Cheryl Espinoza, Debi Arness and Kay Faulkner; sisters, Samantha Horn, Nadine Cope and Ruby Reese; brothers, Jimmy and Milton Reese; grandchildren, Lori Espinoza, Lisa Espinoza and Kevin Faulkner; and great-grandchildren, Mariah and Sherylynn Shaffer and Jaylynn Espinoza.

He is survived by his son, Steve Olds and his partner, Denise Wolk; brothers, Lloyd Olds, Gen. Tom Reese, Monty and Nathan Reese; sisters, Leona Peters, Idabele Schnoebelen, Patsy Bixler and Sandra Bennet; grandchildren, Jesse Peck and his wife, Jennifer, Andrea Peck, Art Arness, Vicki Espinoza, Teresa Espinoza and her husband, Mike Shaffer, Jason Espinoza and his wife, Kellie, Michelle Gruver and her husband, Troy, David Faulkner and his wife, Kathrine; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Logan Peck, Jordan, Christian and Anthony Shaffer, Alyssa Espinoza, Kayla Green, Alexandra, Katelynn and Summer Gruver, Ashley Faulkner, Zack Faulkner, Kevin and Davin Faulkner, Taylor and Amanda Pass, Derek Espinoza, Shaleana Steger and Zoe Mason; and great-great-grandchild, Evan.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
