Soldotna girls topple Service

The Soldotna High School girls basketball team opened up the Nikiski Tipoff Tournament with a 42-32 win over Service at Nikiski High School.

In other games Thursday, Service defeated the Soldotna boys 71-23 while the Juneau-Douglas girls defeated the host Bulldogs 48-25.

The Nikiski boys played Houston in the late game Thursday. The score was unavailable as the Clarion went to press.

Rachel Besse led the Soldotna girls effort with 13 points while Erin Wolfe chipped in with nine points. The Stars led 23-19 at the half, and extended that lead with a 10-2 run in the third quarter.

Play in the tournament continues today with the Juneau girls playing Service at 2:45 p.m., the Houston boys playing Service at 4:30 p.m., the Soldotna girls playing Nikiski at 6: 15 p.m. and the Soldotna boys playing the Bulldogs at 8 p.m.

Tournament play wraps up on Saturday with the Soldotna girls playing Juneau at 1 p.m., the Soldotna boys playing Houston at 2:45 p.m., the Service girls playing Nikiski at 4:30 p.m. and the Service boys playing Nikiski at 6:15 p.m.

Suzanne Parr netted 12 points for the Bears -- eight of them in the first quarter, in Juneau's win over the Bulldogs.

Sally Glaze scored 11 points for the Bulldogs while Karen Rabung netted nine.
