SoHi girls win skiing team title

Posted: Sunday, December 14, 2003

The Soldotna girls and Colony boys picked up team victories Friday and Saturday at the HOLMENKOL Mat-Su Pursuit at Colony High School.

The Soldotna girls edged runner-up Skyview by 28 seconds for the team crown. Also from the peninsula, Homer was fourth and Seward was sixth.

The Stars had four skiers in the overall top 10, which combines times from Friday's 3-kilometer classic race and Saturday's 3-kilometer freestyle race. Katie Franzmann was fourth, Katy Pankoski was fifth, Heidi Keller was ninth and Jenny Smola was 10th for the Stars.

Skyview put Elisabeth Habermann (second) and Elisha Tarries (sixth) in the top 10.

Homer's Aleta Phelps won both the classic and the freestyle races to take the overall title.

On the boys side, the Knights were dominant, winning the team title by more than four minutes over runner-up Soldotna. Also from the peninsula, Skyview was fourth, Homer was fifth and Nikiski was seventh.

The Knights finished with seven in the overall top 10, including overall winner Ross Wise. Soldotna's Ryan Walton finished third, while Skyview's Kyle Dudley was fourth and Soldotna's Matt Habermann was ninth.

The race is unique because, normally, each team tries to find the quickest glide wax. In this race, each team must use the same glide wax.

The event also offered skiers an opportunity to learn about racing at higher levels. Former Region III skiers like Soldotna's Brent Knight, Colony's Sarah Hansen and Colony's Eric Strabel discussed racing. They were joined by Su Valley's Taz Mannix and Phelps, who are in a ski program at Alaska Pacific University. Also in on the symposium was Liz Embick of Valdez, who went to a ski gymnasium in Trondheim, Norway.
