Herrin leads Nikiski girls past SkyHi

Sophomore Sarah Herrin poured in 28 points to lead Nikiski to a 48-35 victory over Skyview Saturday in nonconference action at Nikiski.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Skyview led 21-19 at the half, but the Bulldogs, the defending Class 1-2-3A state champions, dominated the second half. Herrin had 15 points in the second half, while Skyview had 14.

Senior Lindsay Gephardt paced the Panthers with 11 points.

Kenai boys 62, Seward 49

Nick Barnes scored 17 points to lead four Kardinals in double figures as Kenai picked up a nonconference win Saturday at Seward. Geoffrey Gemmell dropped in 15 points, while Jordan Jenckes added 14 and Cole Chappell 10 to pace a balanced Kardinal attack.

Seward's Blake Pullins scored 14 to lead the Seahawks.

Seward girls 37, Kenai 22

Breanna Bardarson racked up 19 points and seven rebounds as the Seward Seahawks beat the visiting Kenai Kardinals 37-22 in the opening game of the season for both squads.

Emma Seigel added 10 points for Seward, which jumped out to a 19-9 first half lead en route to the nonconference victory.

Kendra Steiner scored seven points to lead the Kardinals.

Skyview boys 64, Nikiski 62

The Panthers overcame a 24-15 deficit after one quarter for the nonconference victory Saturday at Nikiski.

It was the season opener for both teams.

The Panthers benefited from a balanced attack, with Ryan Geller scoring 16, Nathan Schmidt scoring 13, Garrett St. Clair scoring 12 and Brian Blossom adding 11.

Jeremiah Taylor had 31 points for the Bulldogs, while Kevin Epperheimer added 17.

Nikiski had 10 3-pointers, but was just 4 of 13 from the foul line. Skyview was 11 of 15 from the charity stripe.

Soldotna outscored Kodiak 18-17 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome 14 points from Kodiak's Molly Cassidy as the Bears downed the Stars 39-33 in nonconference play Saturday at Kodiak.

Soldotna's Marlana McCown and Brittany Howard each scored eight points to lead the Stars, which fell to 0-2 (0-1 in Region III) with the loss.

Brittany Howard led Soldotna with nine points, and Christina Kennedy added six.
