3 peninsula swimmers travel to Ketchikan

Three swimmers from the Kenai Peninsula traveled to Ketchikan from Dec. 5 to 7 for the Speedo/Alaska Age Group Championships.

From the Soldotna Silver Salmon, Kaitlyn Groleske placed seventh in the state in the 12-year-old girls division. Groleske was second in the 500-yard freestyle, third in the 200 freestyle and 100 medley, and fifth in the 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.

Richard Ginter and Katie Kirsis represented the Kachemak Swim Club in Homer. Ginter nabbed third in the 14-year-old boys division. He took first in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, second in the 50 freestyle and 400 medley, third in the 200 medley and 100 freestyle, and fourth in the 200 freestyle.

Kirsis took fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Hakkinen has up-and-down event

Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen took 14th in a 10-kilometer sprint on Friday in a World Cup biathlon in Hochfilzen, Austria, before falling to 56th in the 12.5-kilometer pursuit on Saturday.

On Friday, Hakkinen finished just 61 seconds behind winner Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway.

But in the shooting-intensive pursuit race, Hakkinen lost his mark on the shooting range and it cost him. He missed 10 of his 20 shots.
