Skyview's Jaxon Hill gets the ball past Seward's Holly Ganser in the second half Saturday.

In the season opener for both squads, Skyview had a 29-11 lead with 3:52 left in the third period when senior Melissa Massey, who finished with 14 points, drained a 3-pointer.

Seward then closed the quarter on a 10-2 run, receiving five points during the spurt from sophomore guard Emily Draper.

Seward coach Curtis Berry said his young team came out flat.

"It just took them awhile to realize they could play," Berry said.

Once the Seahawks came to that realization, they continued their comeback in the fourth quarter. Holly Ganser nailed a jumper with three minutes to play to cut the lead to 35-31.

Massey stepped forward for Skyview, nailing a pair of free throws for a 37-31 lead with 1:40 left. The senior also had two blocked shots, and another free throw, in the final 1:40 to help hold off the Seahawks. Jaxon Hill also added a pair of foul shots.

"It was huge, especially since we were missing Brittany Meyer because she missed the first week of practice," said Skyview assistant coach Randi Broyles of Massey's play down the stretch. "She stepped up big."

Even though both teams had just 10 practices in prior to Saturday's game, the Panthers clicked early. After Seward took a 1-0 lead, Massey scored four points to lead Skyview to an 8-1 lead. That spurt swelled to 20-2 when Casee Penrod, who finished with 10 points, nailed a 3-pointer and then a layup with 3:20 left in the second period to make the score 20-3.

"We were executing the offense and we were being aggressive on defense," Broyles said.

The Panthers now do not have to play a game until after the Christmas break.
