Like their Class 4A counterparts, local wrestlers competing in the Class 1-2-3A state wrestling tournament had a difficult time at Bartlett High School on Saturday.
Seldovia's Jordan Geagel was the highest local finisher, placing second after a 6-1 loss to Wrangell's Ethan Pempek, the top-ranked 215-pounder in the state.
Geagel, who is No. 2, capped his wrestling career with his personal highest finish, too, having taken third last year and fifth as a sophomore.
Finishing third was Nikiski freshman Kaden Spurgeon and Seward's Dylan Beck and Ian Filbert.
Spurgeon (140), ranked fifth, earned his impressive finish by a forfeit in the third-place match.
Beck (160), a senior who had previously finished fourth and fifth, was expected to contend for a title, but came up short in Friday's semifinals when he was pinned in 2:59 by Noorvik's third-ranked Tim Field. But the second-ranked Beck fought back by capturing an 8-6 decision over Valdez's fifth-ranked Justin Allen.
Filbert (215) lost in Friday's quarterfinals but still salvaged a solid tournament by beating Craig's fifth-ranked Pat Quigley, 4-2, in the third-place match.
Nikiski's Matt Parker (119) and Seward's Shane Douglas both finished fourth, with fourth-ranked Parker dropping an 11-8 decision to Craig's second-ranked Ryan Baxter and Douglas falling 11-10 to Petersburg's James Valentine.
Fifth-place finishers included Nikiski's Karl Buccholz (160), Seward's Mike Zweifel (145) and Voznesenka's Joe Martushev (140).
Buccholz, who finished sixth last season, earned a 6-1 win over Hoonah's Kole Skaflestad; Zweifel won by forfeit; and Martushev claimed a 7-4 decision over Cordova's Seth Balint.
Taking sixth was Voz's Leo Polushkin (HVY), who was pinned in 4:59 by Cordova's Ken Jones, and Seward's Jed Wilde, who lost a 17-8 major decision to Dhanmark Angeles, of Barrow.
Nikiski's Sawyer Skiba (125) and Tyler Peek (145), Seward's Brenton Meier (112), Nick Markowitz (125) and Josh Zimmerman (HVY) and Ninilchik's Jefferson Klapak (140) were all scheduled for seventh-eighth place matches, but the results were not available as the Clarion went to press. Team results also weren't available.
