Brown Bears drop 2 in Fairbanks: Kenai River earns Saturday point

The Kenai River Brown Bears lost a pair of games to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs on Friday and Saturday in Fairbanks in North American Hockey League action.

After a loss Friday, the Brown Bears lost 2-1 in overtime to earn a point in the standings.

Kenai River is now 9-13-3, good for 21 points and a tie for second in the West Division with Wenatchee. Fairbanks is 18-4-4 and has 40 points to lead the division. The Alaska Avalanche of Wasilla are in last place with 19 points.

Saturday's first period featured fights in front of a fired-up crowd of 2,341, as Kenai River had 95 minutes on 16 infractions and Fairbanks had 95 minutes on 20 infractions.

Kyle Clay, on assists from Jed McGlasson and Jake Musselman, scored a short-handed goal in the first period to give Kenai River the lead.

Fairbanks tied the game in the second period, then won in overtime on a goal by Paul Kirtland.

In Friday's game in front of 2,312, the Ice Dogs grabbed a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Just 2:36 into the second period, Jed McGlasson scored for Kenai River on assists from Matt Bennett and Kyle Clay. After Austin Block scored for Fairbanks, Kevin Wentland, on assists from Gustav Bengston and Nick Simson, scored to put Kenai River within one goal again. Steve Zierke then scored a power-play goal for Fairbanks to give the Ice Dogs a 4-2 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

In the third, Kenai River's ailing power play put a goal on the board when Ryan Lemke scored on assists from Simson and Bengston, put the Brown Bears could never find the equalizer.

Joseph Phillippi had 34 saves for Fairbanks, while Nick Dries had 32 saves for the Brown Bears.
