ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Alaska's unemployment rate edged up to 5.8 percent last month from 5.5 percent in October.
About 700 more Alaskans joined the ranks of the unemployed in November, pushing the number of jobless Alaskans to more than 18,400, according to a report from the Alaska Department of Labor.
During the same period a year ago, the unemployment rate was 5.9 percent.
A slight increase in unemployment during November is typical as the economy continues its seasonal decline, the report said.
Several areas, including Fairbanks, Anchorage, Sitka, Juneau and the Aleutians East Borough are below the statewide jobless rate.
Ten areas had unemployment rates in the double digits, including Kodiak, the Denali Borough and the Wade-Hampton Census area in western Alaska.
