NOME (AP) -- A major fire in the village of St. Michael destroyed the post office and the Alaska Commercial Co. store Saturday morning.
The blaze started late Saturday morning and quickly burned the two adjacent buildings to the ground, Post Master Georgianna Shelikoff told KNOM.
No injuries were reported.
Shelikoff said the post office was closed at the time of the fire. Shelikoff said she received a phone call just after noon that the building was burning. By the time she arrived a few minutes later, the fire was out of control, she said.
The store was open at the time. Shelikoff said one of the customers reported smelling smoke. Everyone was evacuated from the store before it burned down.
The village water truck responded to the blaze, along with several people equipped with fire extinguishers.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear, but Shelikoff said faulty wiring is suspected. The store reportedly shared a wall with the post office building.
Many packages burned in the fire, according to Shelikoff, who said she lost $700 worth of Christmas presents she was planning to mail to friends and relatives.
