Kodiak boys blow past Soldotna

The Kodiak boys basketball team finished up a successful swing through the central Kenai Peninsula Saturday with an 81-35 victory over host Soldotna in Region III/4A basketball action.

The Bears took a 34-20 lead after one half in Soldotna's opener, and never looked back.

Chad Mortenson led all scorers with 27 points, while Elliot Johnson chipped in 14 and Harry Reitze had 13. Ricky Simpson paced Soldotna with 18 points.

Soldotna girls 60, Kodiak 23

The Stars opened their season in impressive fashion Saturday, blowing out the Bears.

Soldotna put eight different players in the scoring column, including three in double figures. Rachel Besse led all scorers with 18 points, while Jenna Syverson had 14 and Hillary Zobeck pumped in 12.

Kenai girls 53, Kodiak 31

The Kardinals opened the season with a win against Kodiak Friday.

Senior forward Sara McLeod led all scoring with 11 points as Kenai opened the game with a 17-point first period. Erica Smith and Dallas Baldwin contributed nine points each and Anna Hall and Erin Smith added eight points apiece.

Kodiak boys 71, Kenai 56

The Kenai Central High boys basketball team opened their season by losing at home to the Kodiak Bears Friday. In a game where the Kardinals only hit 16 field goals, seniors Steve Steiner and Ian Foley led the Kenai team with five 3-point buckets apiece. Steiner had 21 points and Foley logged 18 in the losing effort.

Dean Shinn added 11 points for Kenai.
