Area chamber schedules

· The Nikiski Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon today at Nikiski Fire Station No. 1. The speaker will be Ben Michaels of Team Inc. Lunch is provided by Grizzly’s Grill. For more information, call Judene at 776-5551.

Nonprofit training available

The Foraker Group, an Anchorage firm specializing in training for nonprofit organizations, will hold three classes at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building today: Board Roles and Responsibilities from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; High Performing Boards from 3 to 5 p.m.; and Effective Board Leadership from 6 to 8 p.m. Foraker consultant Dean Gingrich will teach each course.

Building board seeks applications

The Alaska State Homebuilding Association has agreed to sponsor the development of a volunteer Residential Building Code Board. The board will govern the code acceptance and inspection policy and procedures for residential construction throughout the state.

The board will be tasked with adopting a residential building code, determining regional districts, creating state wide inspection standards and procedures and all other business aspects of creating and operating a code enforcement agency.

It will be made up of 11 members.

Wells Fargo to host chamber mixer

The next mixer for the Homer Chamber of Commerce will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wells Fargo Bank in Homer. The event will feature a performance by Homer’s Singing Christmas Card carolers. Refreshments and door prizes also will be available.

Spenard Builders to host cooking course

Spenard Builders Supply in Homer will host a guest appearance by Chef Teri Robl of Kachemak Bay Gourmet. Robl will demonstrate three recipes at the Spenard Design Center at 1 p.m. Saturday — Pacific Rim seafood cakes with mango cream sauce, chipotle steak wraps and grilled Reuben sandwiches.

The free cooking clinic will be open to the public with limited seating. Complimentary copies of the recipes also will be available during the clinic.

Job fair deadline looming

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce, Kenai Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Peninsula Job Center will host a job fair from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Businesses interested in participating should call the Soldotna chamber at 262-9814, Peninsula Job Center at 283-2900 or the Kenai visitors center at 283-1991. The deadline to register is 2 p.m. Friday.

King’s Inn to host gift workshops

A Make your own Christmas Gifts Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the King’s Inn Family Restaurant banquet room in Kenai.

Canned food drive event planned

A Pint Size Workshop cooking class will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allen and Peterson Cooking and Appliance Center in Kenai. The cost of admission is two cans of nonperishable food or a $2 donation to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank.

Festive businesses recognized

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce will give out three awards this year for the best holiday decorated business. Each week a winner will be invited to the Kenai chamber luncheon where they will be presented with a certificate along with a $100 credit from the Homer Electric Association.

Decorated businesses may be nominated by calling the chamber at 283-7989.
