Girl Scouts and Toys for Tots team up

Girl Scout Troop #237 is holding a bake sale today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Safeway in Soldotna to raise funds for Toys for Tots.

Kenai Resilience monthly gathering

Fire stations conduct safety seat checks

The Central Emergency Services/Soldotna Fire Station will conduct a Car Seat Check Up Event at the fire station from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A child passenger safety technician will check to make sure your child is riding safely in your vehicle.

Santa comes to Nikiski

Santa is coming to Nikiski on Friday. He'll be at the Nikiski Senior Center from 3 to 5:30 p.m., armed with hot chocolate and sugar cookies. Parents, please be sure to bring your cameras. For more information call the senior center at 776-7654.

Kenai Library gift drawing

In keeping with tradition, all library cardholders are invited to enter two holiday drawings. This year's drawings will take place Friday during the Holiday Open House, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a youth gift bag and an adult gift bag.

Christmas bird count coming

The public is invited to participate in the Soldotna Christmas Bird Count this Saturday. Volunteers are asked to follow assigneed routes and count every bird they see or hear from first light until dusk. Teams will be formed at the pre-count meeting held from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at the Kaladi Brothers Coffee Co. on S. Kobuk Ave in Soldotna. The cost is $5 per participant. Dress warmly and try to bring a pair of binoculars and a bird identification book. Participants are invited to submit their tally sheets and meet for a potluck after the count at 6 p.m. at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge's Environmental Education Cabin, located next to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge headquarters on Ski Hill Road. Lots of chances to give food

Support the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank and bring in turkeys or hams for the holidays to the facility at 33955 Community College Dr., in Soldotna. For each turkey or ham you will receive a chance to win two ERA Aviation round trip tickets between Kenai and Anchorage. The drawing takes place on Dec. 23.

Ski clinic offered

The Robert Johnson Ski Clinic will be held Dec. 26 at Skyview High School's Tsalteshi trailhead. Classic ski lessons are from noon to 1:15 p.m., skate ski lessons are from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m., and a waxing clinic will be held at 3 to 3:30 p.m. Lessons are by local elite skier Brent Knight. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided. Donations gladly accepted and will benefit the Robert Johnson Ski Scholarship and our local skiers. Free rentals will be available on site. Nikiski pool, waterslide vacation hours

As a special holiday offering, the Nikiski Pool Waterslide will be open at 1 p.m. daily, except for Mondays, during Christmas break. Hours of operation for the pool facility itself are Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. -- 5 p.m. and 6 -- 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 1 -- 5 p.m. and 6 -- 9 p.m. For more information please call 776-8800.

Boys and Girls Club basketball coming

The Boys and Girls Club is accepting registrations for 7th and 8th grade basketball. The season runs Jan. 17 -- March 5, with games beginning the week of Jan. 31. Cost is $70, and the player must be a 2011 member. The annual membership fee is $75. The deadline to register is Dec. 23 at 4 p.m. Visit the Kenai Recreation Center to register, or contact the Athletic Department at 283-3318 for more information.
