Kenai resident Howard A. Hersh died near Cooper Landing by drowning on Dec. 12, 2000. He was 63.
A memorial service is planned for Monday at the North Kenai Baptist Church.
Mr. Hersh was born on Sept. 2, 1937, in Boise, Idaho. He graduated from high school and completed some college. He moved to Alaska in July 1987 and resided in Kenai. Mr. Hersh worked for VECO from August 1989 until he was hired at Cook Inlet Spill Prevention Response Inc. in April 1990. He was an oil spill technician and mechanic at CISPRI until he was injured on the job in March 1999.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmachine riding.
Mr. Hersh's family said, "Howard was a loving family man who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was always helping others and will be missed so very much."
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; sons Bill, Joel and his wife Gigi, John and his wife Suzanne; grandchildren Soren, Emily, Ashley, Christina, Jered, Kristal and Shaylah; brother Leland Hersh and his wife Georgia of Idaho; sisters Jewel Queen, of Idaho and Sonja McCowan, of Willow; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
