Bulldogs shut down SoHi girls

Defending Class 3A girls state champion Nikiski opened up its season Saturday with a 49-29 nonconference victory over visiting Soldotna.

"I think we played really solid for the first game of the year," Nikiski coach Ward Romans said. "There's a lot of positives we can take from this.

"Our three returning starters did well, but we also had a group come in and play key roles."

Sally Glaze, a returning starter, paced all scorers with 18 points. The Bulldogs also received 11 points from Karen Rabung, who transferred to Nikiski from Chugiak.

The lone player in double figures for the Stars was Danielle Kerrone, who hit three 3-pointers in collecting 11 points.

SOLDOTNA BOYS 63, NIKISKI 40

The Stars opened up their season with a nonconference victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

Soldotna jumped to a 23-11 lead after one period and a 45-15 lead at halftime. Mike Metteer paced all scorers with 15 points, while teammate Nick Christensen added 12 points.

David Holloway buried three 3-pointers in pacing the Bulldogs with 13 points.

KENAI GIRLS 52, SEWARD 40

The Kenai Central High School girls basketball team kicked off its season with a non-region win over Seward.

Erica Shinn led the Kardinals in the scoring column with 13 points while Jessi Reilly chipped in with 12 points.

Erin Carr scored a game-high 22 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Seahawks.

Kenai led 23-20 at the half, and the Kardinals pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Seahawks 17-7 during that period. Shin netted five of her points, Karli Knudsen hit a trey, Reilly scored four points, Jamie Montgomery netted three and Erin Smith score two during the run.
