Soldotna Montessori Charter

Mrs. Sotello's third- through sixth-graders recently competed against 38 teams statewide in the 2003 State LEGO League Robotics tournament in Anchorage and brought back two trophies: best teamwork and rookie of the year. The class thanks the 18 parents who volunteered to travel with the class to the tournament.

The class also mixed 544 pounds of bean soup mix for their food bank project.

Mrs. Overturf's kindergartners will begin wood working projects following the holidays. The class is in search of a collapsible workbench, scraps of lumber and nails. Donations can be dropped off in Mrs. Overturf's classroom. Students will build bird feeders and learn the name of tools, safety rules and procedures.

The kindergartners also are taking daily measurements of a rapidly growing Red Lion amaryllis and charting its growth pattern, as well as discussing estimation and comparisons. The classroom also applies estimation practice to the numbers of students eating hot lunch versus the number eating cold lunch each day.
