Hakkinen has best result of season

Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen placed 32nd in a 10-kilometer World Cup sprint on Saturday in Hochfilzen, Austria, for his best finish of the season.

Hakkinen got off to a slow start in this World Cup season. Earlier in the week, a doctor confirmed that Hakkinen had a viral illness and said Hakkinen is well on his way to recovery.

“I knew something was not right and it is good to know what was wrong,” Hakkinen said in a released statement. “I am feeling much better and hope to be on form this week or at the latest in Oberhof.”

Hakkinen’s growing energy reserves showed in his shooting. He nailed all of his prone shots and had only one standing penalty. Hakkinen finished 1 minute, 26.7 seconds behind winner Raphael Poiree of France, who shot clean on his way to a victory in 24:34.

Hakkinen’s next race will be a World Cup relay on Jan. 4 in Oberhof, Germany.
