Seasons greetings and happy winter Solstice to all of my Nikiski neighbors. I am excited that the shortest day of the year is Saturday and then we will again be gaining light.

You can drop off your last-minute presents to the free gift wrap table at the Nikiski Senior Center. Donations will be accepted.

The Noel Tree for the Nikiski area is located at M&M Market. Unwrapped presents should be placed under the tree before Saturday.

I am so happy more and more outdoor lights appear each time I drive around our area. The Nikiski Community Council and the Nikiski Chamber of Commerce are holding the seventh annual Winter Light Display Awards 2007 in the Nikiski Area. There are two categories: business or family. Nomination forms are available by calling Judene Van Cleave at 776-5551. You can vote for your favorite display.

Look in the mail for the Nikiski Chamber of Commerce ballot for the election of eight individuals for the board of directors of the 2008 Nikiski Chamber of Commerce. The ballot contains 17 names of men and women affiliated with businesses involved in chamber. For more information, call 776-5551.

The Nikiski Senior Center will offer blood pressure checks today at 11:30 a.m. at the center.

A site council meeting will be held at 3:45 p.m. today at the Nikiski North Star library. For more information, call 776-5575.

Youth volleyball registration will start today and the deadline to register is Jan. 14. Registrations will be accepted at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center or at the Nikiski pool during business hours. For more information, call 776-8800.

The annual membership meeting for the for the Nikiski Senior Citizens, Inc., will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Nikiski Senior Center. For more information, call 776-7654.

The Nikiski Senior Center will not have the weekly game night Friday.

The Nikiski Senior Center will be closed Dec. 24 and 25.

A dodge ball tournament will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 at North Community Recreation Center.

The Weight Watchers Program will begin at 4 p.m. Jan 7 at Nikiski North Star Elementary School. For more information, call Sharon at 262-7534.

Nikiski babies announced

* Danielle and Douglas Carter of Eagle River announce the birth of their daughter, Dalana Renae, at 7:52 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. She weighed 8 pounds, 11.5 ounces and measured 20.5 inches long.

She joins sister, Della. Her grandparents are Steven and Theresa Carter of Nikiski and Don and Jean Thomson of Eagle River. Her great-grandparents are Thelma Carter of Columbia Falls, Mont., Emma Thomson of Florence, Ore., and Jim and Kitty Weidman of Dallas, Ore.

* Nadia and Adam Anders of Nikiski announce the birth of their son, Samuel Ezra, at 1:53 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna.

He weighed 8 pounds, 14 ounces.

His grandparents are Esther Broder of New York, Gerard Moszkowicz of Belgium, and Martha and Ed Anders of Fairbanks.

* Wendy Hibpshman Potton and Tom Potton of North Dakota announce the birth of their son, Isaac Sawyer Potton, at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, in Minot, N.D.

He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce and measured 20. 5 inches.

He joins sisters, Mayzie, 7 and Ashlyn, 2.

His grandparents are Bob and Jody Hibpshman of Nikiski, Tom Potton of Soldotna and Capri Potton of Enka, N.C. His great-grandparents are Ruth Hibpshman of Nikiski and Betty Barce of Anchorage.

Hoop shoot winners announced

The Nikiski North Star Elementary School held a hoop shoot competition for boys and girls ages 8 through 13. Each participant shot 25 baskets from the free throw line. Winners were determined by the most shots made.

There were 193 participants. The finalist are: boys ages 8 and 9 Patrick Perry, Braden Ellis and Nick Gross; girls ages 8-9 Stacey Christofersen and Alya Pitt; boys ages 10 to 11 Austin Gladden, James Carter and Hunter Holloway; girls ages 10 to 11 Rachel Thompson and Kerry Ross; boys ages 12 to 13 Levi Hansen, Garrett Feller, Shawn Burdick and Justin Burdick; girls ages 12 to 13 Alyssa Darch.

The finalist participated last Saturday at the Kenai Recreation Center. Competition included participants from all over the Kenai Peninsula. State winners and their parents will be flown to Washington for the regional finals.
