2008 holiday cookies: Bake with good luck and good cheer with some of the best of the best

A big thanks to the cookie bakers who entered the Blufton (S.C.) Today Holiday Cookie Contest, our third. It was difficult to select a handful of winners and finalists from the treasure trove of 50 outstanding cookie entries received, but, oh, what a gift they are.

Local baking phenomenon Cris Richardson was chosen the first-place winner for her flavorsome drop "Benne Seed Cookies" and also placed as a finalist in the shaped, rolled and no-bake cookie group for "Chocolate-Dipped German Chocolate Biscotti." (In 2007, her "Pecan Squares" placed first in the bar cookie class.)

Laura Oldham's thoroughly wonderful "Amazing Snickerdoodles with Donut Glaze," which tasted like a cinnamon bun, took the lead in the shaped, molded, rolled, refrigerator and no-bake cookie category (the category garnering the most entries), and Lidia Marques, a newcomer to the Lowcountry, won the top spot in the bar cookie group for "Chinese Chews."

Some of the finalist recipes, keepers all, come from bakers who consistently wow us with cookies that win raves year after year. Charlotte Ward, a previous finalist in the 2006 and 2007 holiday cookie contest, once again made magic with her buttery and intensely vanilla-flavored "Brown Edge Wafers," and Dale Terwilliger's win for "Yum Yums," a bar recipe that can be prepared for baking in just five minutes, comes on the heels of her win in the same category last year.

Before letting you go to start baking some of these remarkable cookies for yourself, a word of thanks to Hardeeville High School senior Naikeema Fields for her cookie-baking help. Knowing a good thing when she tastes it, Fields, who aspires to a career in mass communications and is an avid baker herself, was particularly fond of the Benne Seed Wafers, and so was I. Legend says that consuming benne seeds will bring good luck, and we just couldn't seem to eat enough.

"Benne Seed Cookies (upper right), a drop cookie sensation by Cris Richardson, took the first-place spot for drop cookies, while her "Chocolate-Dipped German Chocolate Biscotti" (lower right), placed as a finalist in the shaped, molded, rolled, refrigerator and no-bake category. Top honors in the bar cookie category were won by Lidia Marques for her moist, fruit-cake like "Chinese Chews," pictured lower left.
