Kenai, SoHi start strong

The Kenai Central girls basketball team tipped off its season by defeating Grace Christian 42-25 on Thursday in the opening round of the Kenai River Challenge at Kenai.

The tournament allows teams from out of the area to play teams from the area. Also Thursday, Soldotna topped Mt. Edgecumbe 59-29 and Nikiski fell to Ketchikan 37-30.

The tourney continues today as Soldotna plays Grace at 4 p.m., Kenai plays Ketchikan at 5:30 p.m. and Nikiski plays Mt. Edgecumbe at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Soldotna plays Ketchikan at noon, Nikiski plays Grace at 1:30 p.m. and Kenai plays Mt. Edgecumbe at 3 p.m.

Morgan Wensley paced the Kardinals on Thursday with 15 points, while Stevie Dunlap had 12.

MacKenzie Fredrickson had 12 points for the Grizzlies.

Soldotna 59, Mt. Edgecumbe 29

The Stars used balanced scoring to cruise past the Braves in the tournament's first round.

Kaillee Skjold paced Soldotna with 13 points, while Julie Litchfield had 10 and Kaili Sholin added 8. Skjold had 11 of her points in the first quarter, when Soldotna jumped out to a 19-11 lead.

Brenna Johnanson paced Mt. Edgecumbe with eight points.

Ketchikan 37, Nikiski 30

After falling behind 6-5 in the first quarter, the Kings outscored the Bulldogs 17-11 in the second quarter.

Mackenzie Moore paced the Bulldogs with eight points.
