Kids learn life skills in basketball league
The Boys and Girls Club fifth-sixth grade 2001 basketball league just wrapped up another great season! Due to the help and support of our wonderful community over 200 fifth- and sixth-graders from all over the area were given the opportunity to be a part of a team, learn and improve their basketball skills, make friends and most importantly -- participate and have fun! The Boys and Girls Club strives to offer quality youth programs encouraging our young people to grow and develop into productive, responsible and caring citizens. Our sports programs are a wonderful way to teach valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, responsibility and respect.
A big "thank you" to all who pitched in to help out where and when needed. Many hands do, indeed, make light work.
And many, many thanks to all the fifth- and sixth-grade basketball coaches who volunteered countless hours to work with our kids, to be excellent role models and to be caring adults in our kids' lives: Mike Gustkey, Ryan Geller, Terry Bryant, Mike Vanderford, Mike Reilly, Rus Hitchcock, Kelly Saltzgiver, Darryl Byerly, Jeff Dallmann, Joy Skjold, Margo Reilly, Rustin Hitchcock Jr., Jim Beeson, Phil Sheridan, Jason Hanley, Tim Delaney, Charlie Stephens, Chris Sonnichsen, Kevin Stalker, Doug Munn, Angela Frost, LaRae Bartolowits, Doug Hallmark, Dan Lanyon, Keith Presley, Velvet Heffner and Chuck Kopp.
Also, the Boys and Girls Club greatly appreciates the community-minded businesses who gave their financial support by sponsoring a team: Shawn Hutchings of Hutchings Chevrolet, Enstar Natural Gas Co., Mike Navarre of Arby's and the Schnable family of Ninilchik. Their support helps ensure our program remains a quality one.
We are truly lucky to live in a place where people are so willingly to get involved and give back to their community!
