Jackie E. McCain
Longtime Alaskan and Kenai resident Jackie E. McCain died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Heritage Place in Soldotna, after a long battle with cancer. He was 77.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Fort Richardson Main Chapel. Chaplin LTC St. John will officiate.
Mr. McCain was born Dec. 9, 1927, in Neelys Landing, Mo., to Gilbert E. and Zora A. McCain.
In 1966, Mr. McCain married Vivian J. Diener Patterson in Chicago and was soon after stationed at Fort Richardson. After a long and distinguished military career, he retired in 1968 as a sergeant major in the U.S. Army with 22 years of service and settled into the area community.
In the 1970s, he worked at the 21st Civil Engineering Squadron on Elmendorf Air Force Base, as a management analyst on Fort Richardson and office manager for Cook Inlet Pipeline Co. In 1984, after living in Anchorage for 18 years he retired Kenai again.
Mr. McCain was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Loyal Order of Moose.
“Jack befriended many people he met out on his adventures, sharing what he had and willingly opening the doors to his new friends. His enduring presence, lively discussions on the state of the world and jovial smile will be missed by all whose lives he touched. He enjoyed spending time with his family at the cabin, fishing anywhere he could get a hook wet, and most recently raising rabbits,” his family said.
Mr. McCain was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert E. McCain; mother Zora A. McCain; brother, Gary James McCain; sister, Freda Courtaway; and son, Jackie L. McCain.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Vivian J. McCain of Kenai; son, Gilbert E. McCain; daughter, Barbara A. McCain of Chicago; stepson, David W. Patterson, and wife, Melinda, of Anchorage; stepdaughter, Elizabeth A. Hartvigson, and husband, Oluf, of Soldotna; grandchildren, Sandra, Chrissy, David and Tessa, all of Chicago; stepgrandchildren, Josephine and Megan Patterson of New York, Timothy Patterson of Anchorage and Pehr and Marit Hartvigson of Soldotna; great-grandson, Steven Kolb of Chicago; siblings, Dana Lemmon and husband, Denzel, and Robert “Joe” McCain, and wife, Paula, all of Hillsboro, Mo., Helen Crane, and husband, Bob of Marshall, Mo., Ann Sydik and George McCain and wife, Carol, of Pevely, Mo., Mary Zimmerman and husband, Wesley, of Barnhart, Mo., Jessie “Joyce” Frey, and husband, Paul, of Gilbertsville, Ky., and Leonard McCain, and wife, Janice, of Laguna Park, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be sent to Heritage Place, 232 Rockwell Ave., Soldotna, AK 99669 or 1st Choice Home Health and Hospice, 159 E. Redoubt Ave. Soldotna, AK 99669.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
