Williams pours in 30 points to lead SoHi boys to victory

Stars shine against Sitka

Shaun Williams poured in 30 points as Soldotna defeated Sitka 70-53 at the three-day Grace Christian Tournament in Anchorage.

Williams scored consistently all evening, but he upped his offensive output as the game went on. After scoring nine points in the first half to help the Stars (2-0 overall) to a 33-25 lead, Williams hit for nine points in the third quarter as Soldotna maintained a 55-43 lead. Williams then had 12 points in the fourth quarter and went 6-of-7 from the foul stripe to help Soldotna hold the lead in the fourth quarter.

Nick Christensen added 15 points and Aaron Hughes pitched in 12 for Soldotna, which shot 19-of-27, or 72 percent, from the foul line.

The Soldotna boys will face off with Cook Inlet Academy today at 4 p.m. The game can be heard on 920 AM. The Stars will finish off the tournament Wednesday with an 8 p.m. tilt against host Grace Christian. That game also can be heard on 920 AM.

In other action Monday, defending Class 3A state champion Grace Christian defeated Cook Inlet Academy 96-71.

The Eagles, a Class 2A school in Soldotna, stayed with the hosts early. CIA led 17-11 after one quarter and 33-27 at halftime. However, the Grizzlies outscored the Eagles 58-31 in the second half to assure victory.

Chet Nettles paced all scorers with 23 points.

Hans Tulip finished with 20 points for Grace Christian.

The Stars evened their record at 1-1 with a win in the first round of the 2000 Lake Kings Invitational over Montgomery, a high school in San Diego.

Soldotna moves on to the tournament semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Sisters Rachel and Greta Besse paced Soldotna's attack Tuesday. Rachel dumped in 18 points, while Greta had 11 points to become the other Stars player in double figures.

Christine Morrison had 20 points for Montgomery.
