WHIZ Kids program available

The Pratt Museum's free Winter Hours Imagination Zone after-school program is held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in the lower level of the Pratt Museum. Every Thursday is science day, sponsored by the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. Kids ages 5 through 95 and their parents are invited to participate. The last day of WHIZ Kids for the year will be Friday. It will restart in February.

Holiday carolers for hire

The Kenai Performers are offering their services as holiday caroling quartets for hire. The carolers dress in vintage Victorian costumes and sing a capella harmony. To book a delivery or to hire a quarter of carolers, call 283-3635.

Pratt Museum announces schedule

The Pratt Museum in Homer will be closed Dec. 25 and Dec. 30 through January for yearly maintenance and repairs. The business office will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ring the doorbell for assistance. The museum will reopen at noon Feb. 4.

Youth acting workshop offered

Alaska Theatre of Youth will hold an acting workshop for ages 12 and up from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 26 through 30 at the University of Alaska Anchorage Wendy Williamson Auditorium lobby. The course will focus on the fundamentals of acting for the camera, including minimalism, continuity and involving the camera in the total acting experience. At the end of the program each participant will receive a demo tape suitable for submission. Fees are $140 per student. Poetry contest announced

Social dance workshops offered

The University of Alaska Anchorage Dance Club will present dance workshops on Fridays from Jan. 24 through Feb. 28 in the UAA dance studio, building K, room 162. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. will be beginning ballroom dance, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. will be Latin dance basics, and from 8 to 9 p.m. will be salsa patterns and variations. The cost for taking all six sessions of any one class is $55 general admission or $45 for UAA students, faculty and staff. The cost for taking all six sessions of any two classes is $100 general admission or $80 for UAA students, faculty and staff. The cost for taking all six sessions of all three classes is $150 general admission or $120 for UAA students, faculty and staff. Attending a single session or a class (except salsa patterns and variations) is $10 general admission of $7 for UAA students, faculty and staff. UAA musical auditions to be held

The University of Alaska Anchorage's theater and dance department will hold auditions for "Into the Woods," by Stephen Sondheim, at 2 p.m. Jan. 25 at UAA's Mainstage Theatre in the arts building. There are roles for nine men and 13 women, though some double casting is likely.

Everyone auditioning needs to prepare two contrasting songs totaling not more than three minutes in length. The two songs should show off the acting skills as well as the vocal range. Call-backs will be at 5 p.m. Feb. 2 in UAA's Wendy Williamson Auditorium. The show will begin rehearsals the first week of march and the production will open April 11. JoAnn and Monte release new CD

JoAnn and Monte, known for their 26 years together as singers, songwriters, recording and performing artists in Alaska, have just released their eighth recording of all-original music, called "North Shack Tracks." The couple, currently touring the Lower 48 and Canada, plan CD premier concerts throughout Alaska in spring 2003. "North Shack Tracks" is available in most music stores throughout the state and online at www.joannandmonte.com.
