This letter is to express my opposition to the proposed Pebble Mine in the Bristol Bay watershed.
I do not see long term benefits to the state of Alaska from this mega mine. It will be the wrong mine at the wrong place with significant environmental problems that this state will have to monitor and deal with for hundreds of years.
The royalties the state will receive are unlikely to cover the costs of monitoring and rehabilitation. Foreign corporations will reap the profits. They would leave Alaska with a superfund sized toxic reservoir threatening two of the major salmon producing watersheds of Bristol Bay.
I support making this headwater area a state wildlife refuge where the preservation of fish, wildlife, water quality and subsistence will continue to be the primary purposes.
