Skyview girls, boys, Seward girls win at Showdown

The Skyview girls, Skyview boys and Seward girls all picked up wins Thursday in the opening round of the Palmer Elks Showdown 2002.

The Skyview girls opened up the tournament with a 64-34 defeat of Houston. Jenny Carpenter paced Skyview with 18 points in the contest.

In the other girls game, Seward clamped down on defense for a 38-35 overtime decision over Palmer. The Moose scored four points in the fourth quarter and two points in overtime. Ann Linville paced Seward with 11 points.

The Skyview boys picked up a 64-57 victory over Houston. Ryan Geller erupted for 26 points, 12 of which came on 3-pointers, for the Panthers. Adam Cooper pitched in 15 points, while Matt Travers had 10.

In the late boys game, Palmer defeated Seward 63-43. Jonah Swiderski had 15 points in the losing cause for Seward.

Kenai boys 66, North Pole 38

Steve Steiner had 24 points as the Kardinals opened up a 33-13 halftime lead in a nonconference game in North Pole.

North Pole girls 49, Kenai 47

North Pole's Sharde Burkhead scored a basket late in the fourth quarter, and the Kenai girls ran out of time to get off one more shot in a nonconference loss at North Pole.

The game was tight throughout, with the teams tied at 22 at the half. Burkhead led all scorers with 27 points.

Anna Hall netted 12 for the Kardinals, Dallas Baldwin scored 11 and Erica Smith scored 10.

Soldotna girls 78, West Valley 29

Hillary Zobeck had 24 points, Jennifer Senette had 17 points and Lauren Christensen added 16 points as the Stars rolled to a big nonconference victory Thursday at West Valley.

West Valley boys 78, Soldotna 49

Tommy Turnbull's 19 points and five 3-pointers were not enough to avert a loss Thursday at West Valley in nonconference play.
