Togiak girls down Cook Inlet in Classic

Only three players found the bottom of the net for the Cook Inlet Academy girls as they fell to Togiak, 48-42, in both teams' first game of the Cook Inlet Classic on Wednesday at Cook Inlet Academy.

Chelsea Hardcastle scored 19 points, six on 3-pointers, while Amie Smithwick added 15 and Brooke Forsi chipped in eight for the Eagles.

But Togiak co-captain Keilyn Carlos scored a game-high 25 points in helping her team overcome a 14-8 first-quarter deficit.

Also for the Huskies, Whitney Carlos had nine points and Dahlia Wassillie added eight.

The Eagles who were just 7-of-15 from the foul line led 23-16 at halftime, but were then outscored 14-8 in the third quarter and 18-11 in the fourth in dropping their opening game.

Both teams resume play today.

CIA will take on Nikolaevsk at 7:30 p.m.

Togiak will face Wasilla Lake at 1:30 p.m.

Yakutat girls 67, SoHi JV 38

The Eagles jumped out to a 16-8 lead after eight minutes and never looked back in claiming their first game of the Cook Inlet Classic on Wednesday.

Led by 19 points from co-captain Heidi Esbenshade and 14 points from Esther Esbenshade, Yakutat opened up a 42-15 lead at the break and finished the game by outscoring the Stars, 25-23.

Also for the Eagles, co-captain Sharnel Vale added 10 points while Katrina Fraker and Justyne Wheeler collected eight points apiece.

The SoHi JV team was led by Becca Satathite, who poured in 20 points.

Yakutat will play Ninilchik at 4:30 p.m. today.

The Stars overcame 10 3-pointers by the Eagles in capturing a win on the opening day of the Cook Inlet Classic. Jake Janson led Soldotna with 14 points, Blaine Carver added 13 and Grant Blossom chipped in nine as the Stars led 29-15 at the break and never trailed the rest of the way. Stephen Adams paced Yakutat with a game-high 26 points, 18 of those coming off of six treys.

The Eagles continue play at 3 p.m. today when they square off with Ninilchik.
