It didn't take very long for Soldotna to spoil Kenai's party.
Celebrating 30 years of Kenai Central High School hockey on Thursday night, the Kardinals surrendered two goals in the first 1:04 of the game and another just under four minutes later in falling to the Stars, 9-0, in North Star Conference action at the Soldotna Sports Center.
Junior Daniel Markstrom recorded a hat trick and a pair of assists while senior captain Clayton Glick and freshman linemate Brad Duwe each chipped in two goals and four assists in leading the Stars to a crucial conference victory.
Duwe got things rolling only 14 seconds into the contest when he lifted the puck over Kenai goaltender Matt Barrett for a quick 1-0 lead.
It didn't stay that way for long, though.
Soldotna struck 50 seconds later when Markstrom scored off an assist from Duwe, and Glick then extended the lead to 4-0 with a pair of tallies just more than eight minutes apart.
With just six seconds remaining in the first period, Anton Olson made it 5-0 off assists from Glick and Zack Waters.
Glick and Duwe then connected for the sixth goal when the senior fed the freshman 5:31 into the second period and Markstrom added his second of the night when he netted a power-play goal late in the period.
Markstrom then picked up where he left off in the second when he scored his third of the game on a third-period power play just 36 seconds into the frame.
Freshman Matt Silver also got into the act when he capped the scoring with another power-play tally with 6:18 remaining in the contest. SoHi's Mike McGrath saved all 19 shots he faced and Barrett denied 16-of-24. Kenai's other goalie, Alex Koch, stepped in net in the third period and turned away 12-of-13 shots.
