Kardinals sweep Bulldogs

Amanda Mills scored a team-high 11 points and Hannah Delaney and Lacie Wortham chipped in nine apiece in leading visiting Kenai to a 50-38 non-conference win over Nikiski on Thursday at Nikiski High School.

The Kardinals jumped in front 12-4 after the first quarter and led 26-14 at the break. The Bulldogs, who were just 5-of-23 from the foul line, did manage to outscore Kenai by three in the final frame, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Shalene Peek paced Nikiski with a team-high 14 points while Rachel Romans and Eliza Chadwick each added seven.

Kenai boys 87, Nikiski 33

Nathan Byrd poured in a game-high 16 points, Nate Saltzgiver added 11 and Josh Lazaro chipped in 10 in leading the visiting Kardinals past the Bulldogs.

Kenai owned a 26-11 edge after the first and outscored Nikiski by 22 in the second.

Evan Holloway led the Bulldogs with seven points.

CIA boys 62, Nikolaevsk 38

The Eagles had 11 players find the bottom of the net in capturing an easy win over the Warriors in the Cook Inlet Classic.

Paced by 13 points from Scott Litchfield and eight from Matt Moffis, Cook Inlet opened up a commanding 24-4 lead after the first quarter and a 32-12 cushion at the break.

Jonah Yakunin and Markell Melkomukov led Nikolaevsk with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Eagles return to the hardwood today at 7:30 p.m. for a tilt with Yakutat, while Nikolaevsk will take on Wasilla Lake at 1:30 p.m. today.

CIA girls 54, Nikolaevsk 16

Brooke Forsi collected a game-high 22 points and Amie Smithwick added 14 as the Eagles cruised to a win over the Warriors in the Classic.

Cassie Fefelov scored eight points for the Warriors, who were shut out in the second quarter.

Both squads continue tourney play today when the Warriors take on Wasilla Lake at 12 p.m. and Cook Inlet meet Yakutat at 6 p.m.

Yakutat girls 70, Ninilchik 25

Rose Fraker poured in a game-high 19 points, Heidi Esbenshade added 10 and the Eagles had no trouble with the Wolverines in improving to 2-0 in the Cook Inlet Classic on Thursday.

Yakutat, which canned eight 3-pointers, led 18-10 after eight minutes before outscoring Ninilchik 11-3 in the second and never looked back. Senior Ashley Bartolowits paced the Wolverines with nine points. Ninilchik will take on Togiak at 3 p.m. today.

Keith Ivers scored a game-high 18 points, 15 of those coming on five 3-pointers, as the Eagles beat the Wolverines on Thursday in the Cook Inlet Classic.

Yakutat, which improved to 1-1 in the tourney, jumped out to an 11-3 lead after eight minutes and a 29-18 advantage at the break.

The Wolverines received 17 points from Tyler Sutherland, but were without the services of skilled senior Austin Vanderford, who is competing in a wrestling tournament in Reno, Nev.

Lucas Wheeler added 11 points and Freddie Munoz chipped in nine for the Eagles.

Ninilchik will play New Stuyahok today at 4:30 p.m.

In other tournament action on Thursday, the Togiak girls easily defeated Wasilla Lake, 60-23, behind 20 points from Keilyn Carlos and 14 and 11 points from Dahlia Wassillie and Virginia Gosuk, respectively.

Propelled by 25 points from Nicholas Petla, the New Stuyahok boys beat Wasilla Lake, 58-40.
