SoHi boys advance to title game in Tip-Off

Posted: Sunday, December 21, 2008

Eleven players found the bottom of the net as Soldotna opened up a 14-point first-quarter lead and never looked back in defeating Cook Inlet Academy, 67-40, in Friday night's semifinal action of the SoHi Tip-Off Tournament.

Liam Andrus paced the championship-bound Stars with 12 points, Matt Grubb and Daniel Geller added 10 each, Boomer Blossom scored eight and Dylan Story chipped in seven.

The Eagles, led by Garyn Munn's nine points, outscored SoHi, 17-13, in the fourth quarter. But it was too little too late by that point, as CIA trailed 37-16 at halftime and 54-23 after three quarters.

Mt. Edgecumbe 50, Kenai 47

Scott Alstrom and Zach Mills scored 19 points apiece in helping the Braves hold off the Kardinals on Friday night in the semifinals of the SoHi Tip-Off Tournament.

Trailing by one after the first, Mt. Edgecumbe outscored the Kards by one in the second and three in the third in advancing to the championship game.

Zach Rabung paced Kenai with 20 points, while Josh Lazaro scored nine and Jacob Bisset added eight.

Skyview 58, Nikiski 57

After dropping a one-point thriller in the opening round on Thursday, the Panthers pulled out a nail-biter over the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon in advancing to Saturday's fifth-place contest.

Junior Cameron Harvey, who in Thursday's setback to Mt. Edgecumbe set the Skyview school record for points in a game with 36, dropped 22 on Nikiski, 15 of those coming on five 3-pointers. Chad Oakes scored 12 points and Albert White 11 for the Panthers, who led 16-6 after eight minutes and 32-19 at halftime.

But behind 26 points from Sheridan Olson and 10 from Brando Wik, the Bulldogs came charging back, outscoring the Panthers, 21-9, in the third before coming up just shy in the fourth.

Houston 53, Cordova 50

Scott Herman netted a game-high 17 points, Bryan Mason added 13 and JT Thompson chipped in 11 in leading the Hawks past the Wolverines on Friday and into the fifth/sixth-place game.

Lainey Beaver paced Mt. Edgecumbe with a game-high 15 points.

Kenai 44, Houston 28

Senior Lacie Wortham scored a game-high 17 points in guiding the Kardinals past the Hawks on Friday.

A 15-4 second quarter helped Kenai hold off Houston, which then managed just six points in the third.

The Hawks were led by Ariel Katzenberger's 10 points.

Trailing by five after eight minutes, CIA scored 10 points in each of the second and third quarters but still trailed by two after three.

Smithwick then netted five of her points in the fourth and Keely Powers added four in helping the Eagles outscore Seldovia, 13-9, down the stretch for the victory.

Sara O'Leary led the Sea Otters with 13 points, while Katie O'Leary scored nine.

Seward 51, Soldotna JV 19
