BETHEL (AP) -- Two little boys from the village of Akiachak apparently drowned after falling into open water while sledding Thursday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers said.

Walter Pasitnak and Jeffrey Nanalook, both 4 years old, were playing outside Pasitnak's home with a sled. After about 15 minutes, Walter's father, Henry Pasitnak, went to check on the boys and noticed they were missing.

A quick search was launched and the two boys were found floating in an area of open water near the edge of the village's sewer lagoon. Their sled was found on the shore next to their bodies.

The village health aide summoned emergency medical personnel from Bethel, but the boys could not be revived. They were pronounced dead at about 4 p.m.

Troopers said there were no signs of foul play. The investigation is continuing.

Akiachak is about 25 miles up the Kuskokwim River from Bethel.
