Skyview heads into Christmas on upbeat note after upending Nikiski

Panthers get happy for holidays

Posted: Sunday, December 23, 2001

The Skyview High School hockey team went into the holiday break on an up note, defeating Nikiski 6-1 Friday in a nonconference game at Jason Peterson Memorial Rink in Nikiski.

"It was a very good game," said Skyview coach David Waltemyer. "Everything was real positive. We seemed to work real well with the stuff we've been working on all this time in practice. It's starting to gel."

Andrew Shane got the Panthers off to a fast start with his goal 21 seconds into the first period, assisted by Daniel Christianson.

Brandon Sachwitz set up two more first-period goals for the Panthers, feeding David Quartly at 9:41 of the period, then getting the helper on Mitchell Burdick's goal with 54 seconds left in the period.

"We've totally improved our passing," Burdick said, adding that the improvement has come as the team continues to gel.

"We're just coming together as a team."

Nikiski got a goal back in the second period when Todd Brigham found the back of the net, assisted by Brad Harrison.

The Bulldogs were able to create some excellent scoring opportunities throughout the game, but Nikiski has had trouble putting the biscuit in the basket all season.

"We're having a hard time putting the puck in the net," said Nikiski coach Irv Smith. "They don't count opportunities on the scoreboard."

The Panthers took advantage of a five-minute major penalty issued to the Bulldogs late in the second period, scoring a power-play goal with 44 seconds left on the penalty. Sachwitz scored the goal, assisted by Christianson.

"Lukas (Fellman) and Christianson made some big plays," Waltemyer said.
