Homer girls take Grace Invitational crown

Posted: Sunday, December 23, 2001

The Homer High School girls basketball team dropped their final game of the Grace Classic basketball tournament 35-22 to Skyview Saturday, but the Mariners did clinch the tournament title.

Homer's Jessica Eller and Caitlin Crandall, Grace's K.C. Long and Shayla Moll and Eielsin's Janay Deloach were named to the girls all-tournament team.

Skyview's Josh Rowell and Mark McGarry were named to the boys all-tournament team, along with Tim Ingalls of Grace, Steve Echtinan of Eielson and Tauren Morgan from West. Eielson took the boys tournament title.

Skyview's Jenny Carpenter was the game's high scorer with 11 points against Homer while teammate Kari Faigle chipped in with eight.

Jessica Eller had six points for the Mariners.

The Skyview boys dropped their tournament finale to West by a score of 48-41.

Mark McGarry and Josh Rowell each netted 11 points for the Panthers, but Skyview couldn't stop West's Morgan, who scored 19 points.

Friday, the Skyview boys dropped a 59-58 decision to Eielson. The game was nip and tuck the entire way, but in the end Josh Rowell's game-high 20 points were not enough to lift the Panthers.

In Friday's girls games involving peninsula teams, Homer edged Grace Christian 39-38, while Eielson scored a similarly razor-close 33-31 victory over Skyview.

In the Skyview game, Eielson's Janay DeLoach pumped in 21 of her team's 33 points. Jenny Carpenter paced Skyview with nine points.
