Tesoro acts quickly to clean up spill

Oil and gas development carries with it the chance for big profits — and a big responsibility to develop such resources safely.

That’s a lesson Tesoro obviously knows well.

A leak in a transfer line at the KPL Dock in Nikiski spilled about 42 gallons of a residual oil product Dec. 15.

Tesoro’s response was immediate. The pipe was fixed and contaminated sand and pebbles were removed from the beach before the flood tide could wash the oil out to sea.

The Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Coast Guard personnel also participated in the cleanup, with Cook Inlet Spill Prevention and Response Inc. taking care of the small amount of sheen that did appear in the water

Thanks to their quick work, a minor spill was kept just that — minor.
