Soldotna cagers sweep Seward

Both the Soldotna boys and girls basketball teams scored road victories at Seward Saturday.

The Soldotna girls improved their record to 3-1 with the victory, while Seward fell to 1-4 with the loss.

Meanwhile, the Soldotna boys picked up their first victory of the season in four tries with a 56-43 triumph over the Seahawks, who fell to 0-2 on the year.

Adam Kiffmeyer paced Soldotna with 21 points, while Ben Histand pitched in nine and Kyle Nettles added eight. The Stars were in control throughout the game, taking a 13-point lead into halftime and a 24-point cushion at the end of three quarters.

Head coach Bill Withrow said the team, which came into the year unexperienced at the varsity level, had made big strides during the first month of play.

"It was like night and day," Withrow said. "They feel a lot more comfortable with themselves, and playing with each other."

Kenai skaters take down Palmer

The Kenai Central hockey team notched a 13-3 victory over Palmer Friday in the Matanuska-Susitna valleys in North Star Conference action.

Kenai coach Brian Gabriel Sr. said the scoring was spread amongst the entire team in the game.

"Our (defense) scored four goals in that game and that really helped," Gabriel Sr. said. "We're trying to get the 'D' more involved in the offense.

"Some of the freshmen even picked up goals. They skated real hard."

With an 8-4 loss Saturday to Colony, Kenai is now 4-2 in the conference.

"Phillip Ischi really stepped it up for us," Gabriel Sr. said. "He has a nose for the net, and he knows where to be at the right time. The puck seems to pop out where he is."

Gabriel Sr. also is happy with the increased progress of goaltenders Scott Kornfield and Ryan Dukowitz.

"Once we get (goaltending) plugged into the equation, we should be looking pretty good," Gabriel Sr. said. "Everybody's passing the puck nicely."

Soldotna also defeated Palmer handily Thursday.
