The annual high school hockey alumni game, a staple of the holiday season, is on tap for Friday evening, though the format may vary a little from past games.
Instead of the traditional Soldotna-Kenai Central grudge match, players from Skyview also have been invited to play, and teams will selected prior to the game and won't be determined by what color jersey players wore in high school.
"We're asking kids from all three schools to play," said Marcia Vann at the Soldotna Sports Center, who is helping organize the event. "Vince Redford will be one of our coaches, and he knows most of the kids, so he's going to help divy them up. (Instead of SoHi-Kenai) we're going to have this team and that team."
Vann said she contacted the Skyview hockey booster club and the Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association when she heard the game might not be played.
Because they got off to a late start organizing the event, Vann said, they have been scrambling to fill the rosters. So far, news of the game has been getting around by word of mouth, and Vann said that anyone interested in playing can contact her at the Soldotna Sports Center at 262-3151.
Vann said she felt it was important that the game take place because of all the members of the community that look forward to playing in or watching the event.
"Especially my son," Vann said. "He's home on leave from the Navy, and it's the only game he'll get to play."
Players will be on ice for practice and warmups at 5:30 Friday evening. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. and festivities will include a split the pot drawing and a puck chuck and several items will be raffled off.
The Skyview booster club and KPHA will split the proceeds. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and children.
