Portions of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge opened to snowmachine use today.
All traditional snowmachine areas are open; closed areas include the headquarters area on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna, Skilak Loop Special Management Area, the Swanson River and Swan Lake canoe systems, the Wolf Lake pipeline corridor, and areas above timberline, except in the Caribou Hills.
Snowmachine users should contact the refuge for a map and regulations before venturing afield.
Refuge deputy manager Jim Hall said most opened areas have adequate snowcover for safe travel. However, in some areas with less than 12 inches of snow, rocks and stumps pose hazards. Hall also said some refuge waters may not be safe to cross with snowmachines.
For more information, contact the refuge at 262-7021, stop by headquarters on Ski Hill Road or visit the Web site at kenai.fws.gv.
