Three Alaska ferries taken out of service for maintenance

Posted: Tuesday, December 26, 2000

JUNEAU (AP) -- Three vessels from the Alaska Marine Highway System fleet are undergoing long term maintenance this winter.

Alaska Ship and Drydock at Ketchikan is working on the Columbia and Matanuska. Bids were opened recently for work on the Aurora, with the apparent low bidder a Portland shipyard.

Work on the Columbia includes replacing equipment and wiring damaged in a switchboard fire June 6. The targeted completion date is May 26, with the Columbia back in service on May 30 when it departs Ketchikan on a southbound run.
