Soldotna resident Fletcher Gilbert Machen died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in an aircraft accident that occurred near Crescent Lake in the foothills of Mount Redoubt. He was 33.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cook Inlet Academy. Larry Huntsberger will officiate. There will be a private burial in Spruce Grove Memorial Park in Kasilof.
Mr. Machen was born April 23, 1967, in Tillamook, Ore. He lived a majority of his life on the Kenai Peninsula.
He was a pilot for Everts Air Fuel Service in Kenai and held a degree in aviation maintenance. He also was a certified aviation mechanic and authorized inspector. He won the FAA Diamond Award for Aviation Safety in 1997.
Mr. Machen had many hobbies. His primary joy in life was his wife and children. He also enjoyed music, basketball, flying, computers, commercial fishing and spending time with friends and family. He was a committed Christian who walked closely with the Lord. He and his family attended the Peninsula Bible Fellowship.
His family said: "Fletcher was known and loved for his magnetic personality and for his easy-going and gentle spirit. He had the God-given ability to make everyone he knew feel special, important and loved. In four years as a husband and father, he loved his family enough to last a lifetime."
Mr. Machen was preceded in death by his father, Raymon D. Machen, who died Dec. 20, 1980.
Mr. Machen is survived by his wife, Trisha; children, Raymon Fletcher, 3, Attison Lynn, 1 1/2, and a third child who is expected in February; his mother, J. Rowelene Machen; his sisters and their spouses, Grant and Dea McClure, Pete and Heidi Iverson, Larry and Amy Blum, Scott and Sari Anderson, and Scott and Rozel Arbelovsky; his in-laws, Wayne and Terry L. Burnett and Kenny and Wendy Whitaker; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. All those surviving Mr. Machen live on the Kenai Peninsula.
